Why Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo stayed at Roma after deadline day mayhem

Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Galatasaray for a double deal involving Victor Nelsson and Nicolo Zaniolo.

Why Tottenham Hotspur target Nicolo Zaniolo stayed at Roma despite Everton, Southampton, and Leeds interest

Nicolo Zaniolo had interest from Tottenham Hotspur for a big part of the January transfer window. However, it is now February, and he is still at AS Roma.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Zaniolo has not been training with the Red and Yellow recently but will resume doing so in February. There were approaches to the Italian club on deadline day.

Leeds United and his agent, Tiago Pinto, were in contact. But no move materialised. They were not happy with the loan with an obligation to buy in the summer proposition.

Everton, Southampton, and RB Leipzig all came up with dry offers at the 11th hour but for loan spells with no obligation or option to buy. Hence, only AC Milan stand as his lone suitor as of now, and that too for the summer.

What next for Spurs and Zaniolo?

This means that Spurs’ interest in the player had faded by the time the winter window was coming to a close. Tottenham were interested in the player – that doesn’t really remain a secret.

It seems that neither Roma nor the player were interested in temporary solutions and want to find a permanent answer to where the Italy international’s future lies in the long term. Nicolo Zaniolo has even received threats from Roma fans for refusing to train with the club in recent days.

But he will remain in Rome at least until the summer. Spurs, meanwhile, ended up with Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal. Hence, there could be an option for us to go back in the summer for Zaniolo when things are a bit more settled and there is time to focus on the 23-year-old.

He will have just one year left on his contract at the Stadio Olimpico this summer if he doesn’t renew his current deal. That could be the perfect opportunity for us to strike and sign him for cheap.
