Tottenham Hotspur dropped interest in Udinese star Gerard Deulofeu due to injury
According to Fabrizio Romano, in exclusive information given to CaughtOffside, Tottenham Hotspur seriously considered a move to sign Gerard Deulofeu in the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old, who has played for Watford and Everton in the Premier League in the past, is having a good season at Udinese. He has scored three goals and provided seven assists in 18 games across competitions so far.
Moreover, his contract expires at the end of next season (Transfermarkt). He is versatile and can play anywhere across the frontline.
Basically, there are a number of reasons why the former Barcelona winger would have been a good option for us to bolster our bench. But a knee injury ended those hopes.
Spurs did fine
Spurs then apparently dropped interest in the player. We ended the January transfer window having signed Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal.
If Deulofeu’s name is added to the list of attackers we have right now, it would be hard to imagine exactly where he can hope to play in our system.
Son Heung-min and Harry Kane are virtually untouchable in the starting XI while Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison are already battling amongst themselves for a position down the right flank.
Bryan Gil left for Sevilla on loan until the end of the season. But Deulofeu may not have been open to the passive role Gil has at N17, which is to be used in largely unimportant games and as a substitute.

He is 28, after all, and would want to make the most of the best years of his playing days. It remains to be seen if we revisit this interest when he returns from his knee injury.
