Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane claims Alan Shearer’s 260-goal record is ‘there to be broken’

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is 60 goals away from levelling Alan Shearer’s all-time goalscoring record of 260 goals in the Premier League.

The Newcastle United legend’s record has almost seemed unbreakable for years. Wayne Rooney spent almost the entirety of his professional career in the Premier League at Manchester United and Everton.

But even he managed to net 208 goals – 52 short of Shearer’s numbers. Kane is now eight goals away from Rooney’s tally and is just 29 years of age. He is also one goal away from overtaking the latter’s record of 53 goals for the England national team – which is still a record.

He entered the 200-goal club (just the third Premier League player to ever reach that milestone) when he scored in Spurs’ 1-0 win against Manchester City on Sunday (February 5).

Shearer’s record in Kane’s sights

That was also his 267th goal for the Lilywhites, which overtook Jimmy Greaves’ record of 266 goals across competitions for the club. Speaking after his historic achievement, Kane was asked about Shearer’s record, to which he replied (h/t Evening Standard):

“It’s always there in the back of my mind but I just take it game by game, season by season. It’s definitely there to be broken and I’m feeling good and feeling fit, so we’ll see what happens.

It’s been an amazing journey. I’ve been here since I was 11 years old, it’s 18 years of my life – a lot of hard work and dedication.”

There is every chance Kane breaks Shearer’s record and even go on to touch the 300 mark if he stays at Tottenham for the remainder of his career. That will, of course, be the dream for us.

But we better start winning something to prove to Kane that he is making the right choice by dedicating his services to us. He will, of course, be a major contributor if we are to win silverware anytime soon.

But it is about time his teammates bail him out if he isn’t doing well. That, however, has almost never been the problem with the England international, who has already scored 19 goals in 30 games across competitions this term.
