Davinson Sanchez could replace Cristian Romero in Tottenham Hotspur XI vs Leicester City
Cristian Romero got himself sent off in Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win against Manchester City on Sunday (5 February).
He was already booked when he extended his right leg to bring down Jack Grealish in the 87th minute. As a result, he will miss the game against Leicester City this weekend at the King Power Stadium.
Romero is one of our better players. He is a World Cup winner with Argentina and a huge part of manager Lionel Scolini and manager Antonio Conte’s teams.
You don’t please these two bosses if you’re not a good player. Romero is, dare we say, world-class and for us, a very, very important player. His absence usually leads to our defence looking shakier than usual this season.
Without the 24-year-old Argentine against Leicester, Conte would have to make a tough call. He will have to decide who comes in for him, and according to Alasdair Gold of Football.London, Davinson Sanchez would be the logical option.
Answering a question in a Q&A session, he said:
“I think that’s probably the most logical change as Spurs were really happy with the Colombian’s display in leading the line against Preston and he came on and was solid in those final eight minutes on Sunday when the team needed him after Romero had seen red.
“The other options are Lenglet coming in with Dier switching to the right but after one of the latter’s best performances this season it would seem odd to unsettle him immediately afterwards.
“The other option is to play Emerson on the right of the back three and hand Porro his debut, but you would think that Sanchez is the more natural replacement for Romero.”
The Colombia international doesn’t get credit for the talent that he possesses. He is often criticised but one must remember that he has been reduced to a bit-part player and it’s hard for a player to play at irregular intervals and be flawless.
Sanchez is arguably a more experienced defender than Japhet Tanganga. He is also a better option than playing Emerson Royal at right centre-back. For some reason that just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Hence, manager Antonio Conte would be wise to pick Sanchez and not overthink this against Leicester. The former Ajax centre-back is good enough to partner Eric Dier and Ben Davies at the back.
