Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres in the summer
Tottenham are reportedly looking to bring Spanish central defender Pau Torres to North London in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to Spanish publication Fichajes.
The 26-year-old currently plays for Villarreal in La Liga and has caught the attention of Spurs due to his impressive defending skills and ability to bring the ball out of the back. He is considered one of the best centre-backs in the Spanish league.
Torres’ contract with Villarreal is set to end in 2024, and with the Spanish club needing to generate revenue, it looks like he may be on the move next summer. Tottenham have been monitoring his progress for some time and believe he fits their playing style perfectly, with his strong ball output and excellent defensive ability.
The Premier League is known for its physicality and tough forwards, but Tottenham believe that their system can cover Torres and help him to excel in the English top flight. If he does sign, he will be joining a team that has been undergoing a change in recent months under Antonio Conte.
Spurs have been in need of a top-class central defender for some time now and Pau Torres could be the solution they have been searching for. Cristian Romero is exceptional but we could do with more reinforcement.
Under the assumption that Antonio Conte will continue being our manager next season, the Italian manager likes to line up with a system that has three central defenders. Currently, only one of those three positions is occupied by a player who is actually world-class.
Being left-footed, Tottenham cannot hope for a better option than Pau Torres to be the long-term replacement for what can be called the ‘Ben Davies’ role in the ‘Antonio Conte system’. The Spaniard will be a huge upgrade.
Tottenham did sign Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona for the season. The Frenchman has not done enough to convince us that he has a long-term future here and Spurs might choose not to sign him permanently.
