Tottenham Hotspur could sign Barcelona star Clement Lenglet permanently this summer
Tottenham Hotspur could sign Clement Lenglet permanently from Barcelona this summer, as per Spanish outlet SPORT.
The Lilywhites loaned the Frenchman for a year last summer and the deal does not have any clause to make the move permanent. However, Spurs could find success in signing him permanently if they make a suitable offer to Barcelona.
The Catalan giants will apparently not raise any significant hurdles if Spurs make an offer that doesn’t see them lose money on Lenglet. They signed him for a fee of £32million from Sevilla in the summer of 2018.
He has since struggled to make himself a regular in Barca’s backline. Should Spurs pay a sum in that region for the 27-year-old defender?
Should Spurs go ahead with a permanent move?
It is perhaps something not a lot of fans will be on board with. He is certainly a good centre-back capable of playing backup to Eric Dier and Cristian Romero.
But we can certainly do better than him. What Spurs need is a world-class name at the back – someone who can slot in alongside Dier and Romero, especially down the left-hand side of manager Antonio Conte’s back three where Ben Davies has deputised for a long time.
If Lenglet is signed along with a world-class centre-back, then it would be a very good scenario for us. But hopefully, Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici don’t see the former Sevilla star as the only addition to our defensive ranks this summer.
Lenglet has played 21 games across competitions for us this season and has largely been impressive. Of course, he can be more solid defensively but he has proven to be decent with the ball at his feet.

With a backline that boasts names such as Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, and Andreas Christensen, Barca arguably don’t need Lenglet back urgently. If they are willing to sell him for a reasonable fee, then Spurs should consider this move.
