Scout Jeff Vetere leaves Tottenham Hotspur after revealing Kevin Mier as transfer target

Tottenham Hotspur scout Jeff Vetere has resigned after mistakenly revealing Atletico Nacional goalkeeper Kevin Mier as one of the club’s transfer targets, according to Daily Mail (h/t Metro).

He was quoted as saying on Colombia’s Win Sports TV:

“I see a goalkeeper who does not lack anything to cross the pond. We are looking because it is our task to see who the best youngsters are for international football. Taking advantage of my stay in Colombia, I took the opportunity to go there [Nacional] and meet a goalkeeper who is important to me.

“I think he’s going to play for the national side soon. He has things, for me, they are not normal for a boy of his age. I was surprised by his confidence and his handling of the ball.”

Vetere has since resigned from the club following a meeting with the club’s heads. Apparently, the club were also in favour of letting him leave.

Right call?

He formerly worked with Real Madrid, Charlton Athletic, West Ham United, Newcastle United and Birmingham City. Vetere was hired by Tottenham director Fabio Paratici.

It’s not a good look on any professional when they make rookie mistakes such as this which can financially cost the club. Now, Nacional would be aware that Spurs are eyeing up one of their star players.

Moreover, this would draw the attention of other teams towards the player and in a worst-case scenario for us, incite a bidding war if any other suitor takes a liking to Mier. He is already slowly but surely making a name for himself in international football.

He has already earned 14 caps for Colombia’s U20 national team and would be looking to make his debut for the U23 team soon. Mier is also Nacional’s first-choice goalkeeper and has 62 senior appearances to his name.

Let’s see if Spurs still pursue the 22-year-old. There’s no real reason not to. We will just have to be quick if we want to get a deal done in time before others.
