Journalist brands Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in former Arsenal star Emiliano Martinez ‘strange’
Journalist Alasdair Gold has given his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Answer a question in a Q&A session on Football.London, Gold wrote:
“I wrote in a piece a few weeks back that Martinez is one of the older goalkeepers that Spurs have been looking at in recent seasons but with him turning 31 soon into next season, he’s not exactly one for the future.
“Spurs’ shortlist of potential players to eventually succeed Hugo Lloris contains the likes of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, Brentford’s David Raya, Brighton stopper Robert Sanchez and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan. Martinez was an older player they’ve looked at, along with Jan Oblak.”
He continued about other goalkeeping targets before finally concluding:
“Spurs will look to secure their long-term successor to Lloris this summer and it would seem strange to target an older goalkeeper for the first choice role.”
Gold mirrors the viewpoint of a majority of Spurs fans here. The Argentina international, who won 2022 FIFA The Best Men’s Goalkeeper award last month after helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is currently 30.
It hardly makes sense to bring him in as Hugo Lloris’ (36) replacement unless we plan on entering the market once again for a new goalkeeper. David Raya (27) and Robert Sanchez (25) are both good, younger options playing in the Premier League for clubs that aren’t as big as Spurs right now.
Mike Maignan of AC Milan is also an elite option. Given Martinez’s history with Arsenal, perhaps Spurs fans or the player himself could think twice about a move to N17, but it won’t be the first time a player has represented both teams.
Martinez was at Arsenal between 2010 and 2020 before finally moving to Aston Villa on a permanent basis to seek more playing time. That has worked out well for him.

But Spurs would be smarter if they sign an equally talented goalkeeper who, like the time we signed Lloris from Olympique Lyonnais, could promise us a decade-long allegiance so that this is a position we don’t have to worry about while strengthening other areas of the pitch.
