Pundit says Tottenham Hotspur Antonio Conte was ‘happy that Southampton equalised’

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has made a surprising claim that Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte, in his opinion, would have been happy that Southampton equalised to steal a point this weekend.

The Lilywhites led by 3-1 with around 12 or so minutes left on the clock. They conceded a goal to Theo Walcott and set themselves up for an anxious finish at St. Mary’s last weekend.

As it turned out, a handball from substitute Pape Matar Sarr handed Southampton a penalty in stoppage time, which was converted flawlessly by James Ward-Prowse.

Speaking after the game in his post-match interview, Conte lashed out like he had never before since joining Spurs in 2021. He questioned the club’s winning mentality, and the way it is run, and called the players ‘selfish’, amongst many, many other things.

Conte to leave Spurs?

According to Sutton, who also played for Aston Villa and Celtic in the past, this was a pre-meditated rant and it would have come in the near future if it didn’t come after the draw against the Saints.

He said on BBC 5 Live Sports:

“I actually think Conte was happy that Southampton equalised. This was a pre-meditated rant. This was always going to happen. Let’s get it right… this was always going to happen. Conte shooting off, blaming everybody else, firing off and that is what he did. So I suspect he wasn’t too dissatisfied. If it wasn’t against Southampton, it would have been another week.”

Sutton can’t be called entirely wrong for his opinion here. Spurs fans would attest to the fact that the Italian tactician has looked unpleasant and unhappy here at Tottenham in recent months.

He is not renewing his contract and hasn’t once given a solid hint that he will. His race here seems to be run. The rant seemed like it was bottled up within him all this while.

Perhaps the club were nice to him when he had the time off in Italy to recover from gallbladder surgery, so he held onto his feelings for a while. Whatever the reason may be, it seems healthy for both parties to part ways. We can jot this down as another mistake by the club hierarchy.
