Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min talks up Jurgen Klinsmann after South Korea appointment

Son Heung-min has praised former Tottenham Hotspur superstar Jurgen Klinsmann after the latter’s appointment as the South Korean national team manager earlier this year.

The former Germany international played two seasons at Spurs over two separate spells in the 1990s. He was widely regarded as one of the very best strikers during his playing days and won the FIFA World Cup with Germany in 1990.

He has replaced Paulo Bento in the managerial hot seat for South Korea as they prepare to take on Colombia in an international friendly on 25 March. Son said in an interview (h/t Evening Standard):

“At Tottenham, we still have people who spent time with coach Klinsmann back in his playing days, and he has such a sterling reputation. I have only had brief conversations with him, but I could already tell he was a great man who cares so much about players. Tottenham official told me we have an exceptional coach for south Korea, and that has only raised my expectations.”

Klinsmann has a solid reputation as a manager, having been in charge of teams such as Germany, Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin in the past. He led Die Mannschaft to a third-place finish at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Son, meanwhile, could have another managerial change to deal with. Spurs could sack manager Antonio Conte, with the Italian tactician going on an unhinged rant against the Lilywhites after their draw against Southampton last weekend at St. Mary’s.

It remains to be seen who we appoint. Klinsmann wouldn’t have been a bad shout but he is now with South Korea – not that he was ever linked with us anyway. Moreover, the German doesn’t really have a winning pedigree as a manager.

If he does, he is yet to show it. We’d be better off bringing in an experienced manager who has fresh ideas and a history of making a team better with limited resources.

Of course, we’d want any new manager to be backed as much as possible in the transfer market. But realistically speaking, Spurs aren’t the richest team in the world and have a limited coffer that Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici use wisely.
