Tim Sherwood claims he made Tottenham Hotspur reject £600k offer from Leicester City for Harry Kane

Tim Sherwood was Tottenham Hotspur’s manager from 2013 to 2014 and during this short stint, he played a huge role in keeping Harry Kane at the club.

The England international was then an up-and-coming youngster at Spurs and was yet to make a proper mark on the first team. After loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall and Norwich City, Leicester City signed him on a six-month deal in 2013.

Perhaps around that time, the Foxes apparently had a bid lined up to sign Kane permanently. Sherwood told TalkSPORT:

“Tottenham wanted players good enough for the Premier League and the Champions League. It was obviously Franco Baldini getting in his ear and telling him he wasn’t good enough. They had a bid lined up from Leicester to sell him for £600k which I obviously resisted.”

There was no way I was letting the boy going for that. He’d have eaten £600k worth of food since joining the club at ten [years old].”

Sherwood, who managed Aston Villa after leaving Spurs in 2014, added that he wasn’t sure if chairman Daniel Levy was fully sold on the idea of selling Kane permanently. But there was doubt if he could hack it in the Premier League.

Kane, by Sherwood’s admission, convinced the club that either the price tag had to go up or that he was good enough for the first team. Fast forward to today, and he is Tottenham Hotspur’s record goalscorer.

It would have been the blunder of the century for Spurs had they agreed to sell the England international for that sum to the Foxes. For Leicester, it would have been a steal in every sense of the word.

His future is now up in the air at Spurs. There should be absolutely no doubt about the club’s stance now and there would not be a single soul at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium doubting if Kane can continue playing at the top level for the next several years. His deal expires in the summer of 2024 and perhaps the hold-up is from his end.
