Spurs News: Tottenham Hotspur eyeing Sporting CP star Manuel Ugarte after Pedro Porro capture

Tottenham Hotspur are apparently tracking Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte ahead of the summer transfer window, as per Record.pt (h/t Football.London).

Spurs got a close look at the Uruguay international when he played against them in the UEFA Champions League group stages earlier this season. The 21-year-old is still a budding midfielder.

He will only get better with age and is already an important cog in manager Ruben Amorim’s machine. He plays as a defensive midfielder – the same position as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Depth on the bench is an important aspect for teams that want to win trophies. Ugarte can provide just that. He is hopefully at an age where he will understand the concept and purpose of competition.

Ugarte to Spurs?

Moreover, he could be a great long-term acquisition for us. Right now, our midfield depth, apart from Hojbjerg and Rodriogo Bentancur, contains Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, and Oliver Skipp.

They haven’t been world class for us this season but Sarr and Skipp have done okay whenever called upon. Ugarte will instantly raise the quality of our midfield roster.

It remains to be seen what price tag Sporting CP place on him, if they put one at all. They would be in no rush to sell the former CA Fenix starlet as his current deal at the Jose Alvalade Stadium expires in the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt).

If we don’t sign him, that’s okay. Hopefully the club know that they are more in need of a world-class defender and a goalkeeper to replace Hugo Lloris in the long run. Once that is done, we can focus on signing a new, world-class midfielder.
