Chris Sutton backs Luis Enrique to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking to BBC’s Monday Night Club, Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has endorsed Luis Enrique as the ideal candidate to succeed Antonio Conte as Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Following Conte’s recent departure, Sutton criticized the Italian’s “negative” brand of football during his 16-month tenure at Spurs and urged the club to appoint a more attack-minded successor.

Sutton also expressed his support for Enrique’s candidacy, saying that the former Spain and Barcelona title-winning manager would be a great fit for Tottenham. The 52-year-old has an impressive track record, having won the Champions League and La Liga, among other honours, during his time managing in Spain.

He also led Barcelona to a treble trophy haul in 2014 with an attacking trio of Neymar, Luis Suarez, and Lionel Messi. It was one of the best teams that football had ever seen and Enrique managed it to perfection.

While Sutton acknowledged that trophies will be the benchmark for any new Spurs manager, he also emphasized the importance of playing attractive football. He believes that appointing a manager who prioritizes attacking football will help relieve some of the criticism that has been directed at Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Speaking about Enrique, here is what Sutton had to say about the former Spanish national team manager.

“I think what is really important for Spurs, this was always a criticism of Conte, the brand of football was negative, from the start of the season how many times have you seen Spurs play an exciting brand of football”

“That’s why Luis Enrique ticks that box. I think Mauricio Pochettino is a really interesting one because I suspect a lot of Spurs fans like the idea of him returning and that love story of him having a second opportunity”

Mauricio Pochettino, who led Tottenham to their first Champions League final in 2019, is also a popular choice among Spurs fans. However, his unceremonious sacking could leave a bitter taste in the mouth when it comes to reappointment.

Enrique is a great manager. Anyone who has followed his Spain team in recent years will know how much he is an advocate of possession-based football and it remains to be seen if he instils that idea in the Tottenham players.
