Pedro Perro reacts on Twitter to Tottenham Hotspur star Emerson Royal’s injury on Brazil duty
Tottenham Hotspur’s Emerson Royal is set to undergo knee surgery after an injury he sustained playing for Brazil in their 2-1 friendly win against Morocco last week.
He played the full 90 minutes for the Selecao before picking up the issue in stoppage time. A statement by the club confirmed (h/t Reuters):
“We can confirm that Emerson Royal suffered a meniscus injury to his left knee while on international duty with Brazil last week. The defender will undergo surgery before beginning his rehabilitation with our medical staff.”
Emerson has played in 32 games for us across competitions. There have been questions regarding his overall gameplay and his effectiveness in attack as well as defence.
But he has remained manager Antonio Conte’s first-choice pick in the right-back spot for a while. Pedro Porro has only recently taken that mantle for him – but only a few weeks after his move from Sporting CP was confirmed in January.
That is majorly due to Emerson’s good form which he showed earlier this year. The Spain international is now set to be our undisputed starter in that position courtesy of the former Barcelona man’s injury.
Emerson and Porro are competitors for the starting berth, but they are teammates first. The former Manchester City right-back sent a message to support on Twitter and said:
“Good recovery bro 💙 Let’s fight for you 🦾. @Emerson_Royal22”

Luckily, we managed to sign Porro in January for times like this. Even when Emerson returns, fans will expect the former to be our starting right-back given the investment by the club in his despite the Brazilian being on their books. Matt Doherty was sold to Atletico Madrid in January while Djed Spence was allowed to join Stade Rennes on loan until the summer.
