Journalist gives his verdict on Graham Potter joining Tottenham Hotspur after Chelsea sack

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have both parted ways with their managers recently. Antonio Conte left Spurs by mutual consent last month.

Chelsea, meanwhile, sacked Graham Potter on Sunday (2 April) and have Bruno Saltor as their interim manager for the time being. Spurs, meanwhile, are sticking with Cristian Stellini in the short run.

A permanent replacement for Antonio Conte is being sought after. Potter’s sacking at Chelsea would automatically, at least in the minds of some, put him in the running for a job at a big club who are looking to hire a new manager.

Leicester City are in the same boat, having sacked Brendan Rodgers on the same day as Potter’s departure. In his column for the Athletic (Subscription Required), journalist David Ornstein gave his verdict on the situation.

“It’s far too early to say. Leicester, who also parted ways with Brendan Rodgers on Sunday, have long admired Potter and Tottenham, who did the same with Antonio Conte a week earlier, held discussions with him two years ago when he was still at Brighton but he wasn’t an option for them until last night.

“Chelsea believe Potter will be better for the experience of the past few months and will go on to be a top coach elsewhere but it is unclear at which level he will be welcomed back to the Premier League, if that’s where his next job turns out to be.”

Potter’s good work at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he made them into a very stable mid-table team pushing for European spots, cannot be discredited. But sometimes, managers can find it hard when they take a step up.

That is what happened with Potter at Stamford Bridge. The English tactician had the tools at his disposal and was backed with signings such as Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile and Enzo Fernandez.

Yet, he never seemed to get the team clicking together. Chelsea were notably poor in attack and struggled to score goals at an alarming rate. They have scored just 29 times in 28 Premier League games and are 11th in the table.

No team in the top half has scored less than 37 goals. Granted Chelsea didn’t have a striker like Harry Kane or a prolific winger like Son Heung-min, but there was nothing he did at Chelsea that warrants Spurs to chase him. We can wait for better options.
