Tanguy Ndombele reveals “no choice” but to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Napoli last summer

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Tanguy Ndombele has revealed that he had “no choice” but to leave the North London side for Napoli in the summer of 2022 under Antonio Conte.

Last summer, the France international joined the Serie A giants on a temporary move until the end of the season after being told he had no place at Spurs. In Italy, the midfielder has found some rhythm back.

Speaking to SoFoot (h/t Evening Standard), the 26-year-old feels delighted to have joined the Partenopei. Former manager Conte had made it clear to the former Olympique Lyon star that he would not be trusted.

“There was no other solution with Tottenham and I’m happy I chose Napoli. With Conte there was no choice, I would have liked to demonstrate my value on the pitch but I was on the edge of the group. It was communicated to me from the first day of training with the team.”

Napoli are flying high in the current campaign. The Naples-based club are leading the Serie A table by a considerable margin and are on course to lift the league title for the first time in over three decades.

Ndombele has been a regular member of Luciano Spalletti’s senior squad. He has featured 34 times in all competitions for the Partenopei, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

However, most of the midfielder’s appearances have come off the bench. The 26-year-old is yet to complete the full 90 minutes in a league fixture for the Italian outfit.

Napoli have the option to make Ndombele’s move permanent next summer. But it remains to be seen whether the Serie A giants will trigger the option to keep a hold of Tottenham’s club-record signing.

The France international signed for Spurs in the summer of 2019 from Lyon. Unfortunately, despite the midfielder’s apparent talent, he was unable to convince the likes of Jose Mourinho and Conte.

However, with the North London side parting ways with the former Inter Milan and Chelsea head coach, Ndombele will evidently have the chance to stake a claim in the team if he returns to N17.
