Daniel Levy releases statement after sacking Cristian Stellini from Tottenham Hotspur post
Tottenham Hotspur have sacked Cristian Stellini from his role as an interim manager following the club’s embarrassing 6-1 Premier League loss against Newcastle United last weekend.
Chairman Daniel Levy released a statement to this effect, an excerpt of which read (h/t Sky Sports):
“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.
“Ryan Mason will take over head coach duties with immediate effect. Ryan knows the club and the players well. We shall update further on his coaching staff in due course.”
Stellini became Spurs’ interim manager after Antonio Conte left by mutual consent last month. Ryan Mason was installed as his assistant manager.
Right call?
Stellini earned the position by managing a handful of wins, including against Manchester City in the league, when Conte was absent after appendix surgery. It probably gave the club faith that he could manage the club until at least the summer.
It wasn’t to be. Perhaps in a bid to impose his identity on the team, he started a weird back four with the hyper-attacking pair of Ivan Perisic and Pedro Porro as full-backs.
It can’t be said that the formation was the entire reason for our capitulation against the Magpies, but it did give the hosts a lot of space to exploit in the first half, where they scored five goals in 21 minutes.
Stellini came along with Conte when the former Inter Milan and Juventus manager was hired by Spurs. He was a part of his coaching staff and perhaps that is as far as his association with the club should have been.

A new manager will come and he will most likely have his own team to assist in the backroom. Stellini’s departure was bound to come sometime in that regard. It is a shame it had to end this way.
