Greece manager Gus Poyet says he wants ‘unbelievable’ Tottenham Hotspur job

Former Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager and current Greece head coach Gus Poyet has admitted that he will become the Lilywhites’ manager if he is offered the opportunity.

He was Juande Ramos’ assistant from 2007 to 2008 where he won the League Cup with Spurs – the lost trophy won by the club. Since then, he has managed various teams including Real Betis, Girondins de Bordeaux and currently, the Greek national team.

Spurs are on the lookout for a new manager ever since Antonio Conte left the club by mutual consent during the March international break. The process would have intensified after the recent sacking of interim boss Cristian Stellini.

Ryan Mason is currently the club’s interim boss. Speaking on the Sacked in the Morning Podcast on BBC, Poyet confessed his desire to become Tottenham’s head coach. He said:

“I know Daniel Levy very well. I was there as a coach when he was there and I know what the club needs. I have too many friends who support Tottenham and I know how much it means for them to win a trophy… For me, in terms of knowledge, it is simple. If I had the chance it would be unbelievable, it would be fantastic.”

The right call?

He is certainly putting himself out there for the Spurs job. It will be interesting to see how the Greek FA reacts to this considering he is still contracted to them.

Apart from that, it remains to be seen how the Tottenham board and particularly Daniel Levy will react to this if it is brought to their attention. Poyet, 55, has certainly amassed experience over the last 15 years as head coach of various teams.

If he says he knows what the club needs, then perhaps he does. But our new manager should be able to instantly command the dressing room and have a personality and vision that convinces world-class players to join Spurs despite our lack of success on the pitch.

It is better if we stick with a more reputed name like Julian Nagelsmann for now. Poyet could be a risky hire at a time Spurs need an identity and someone who is here for the long term – a manager who isn’t just here for the transitory phase but for the entire project.
