BBC pundit Rory Smith urges Man United star De Gea to join Tottenham
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Rory Smith has urged Manchester United legend David de Gea to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, claiming it to be his best bet.
Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has been at the centre of transfer rumours as the 32-year-old Spaniard is yet to sign a contract extension with the club, leading to speculations that he might be on his way out of the club at the end of the season.
The talented shot-stopper has been attracting a lot of criticism for his recent performances and his struggles to adapt to Erik ten Hag’s style of play, which requires goalkeepers to have impressive distribution skills.
BBC pundit Rory Smith has now urged David De Gea to join Tottenham, as it could be the best bet for the player. Smith acknowledges that there is nowhere across Europe that could match the goalkeeper’s wages, which could make it difficult for him to find a new club unless he is willing to take a pay cut.
Spurs might be the perfect option for De Gea if he wants to try a new challenge, but from Manchester United’s point of view, if he cannot play the way they want him to, they need a new goalkeeper.
Speaking about the talented Spaniard, here is what Smith had to say about De Gea’s future
“For him the problem is, I don’t see where he goes unless he takes a massive pay cut. Spurs might be the best bet for him, if he wants a new challenge, but from the United point I think it’s pretty clear that you have to say if you can’t play the way we want you to play then we need a new goalkeeper.”

Tottenham Hotspur are apparently looking for a replacement for their current goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, who is 36 years old and has cost the side valuable points with his performances during the season.
Tottenham are yet to make a decision about whether to go for a younger replacement or to bring in a more experienced goalkeeper like De Gea, who has proven himself in the Premier League over the years.
