Garth Crooks believes Tottenham must go for Julen Lopetegui
Writing in his column in BBC Sport, former Tottenham Hotspur player Garth Crooks has suggested that Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui could be a great candidate for the Spurs managerial job.
Tottenham has been without a permanent manager since the exit of Antonio Conte back in March. A host of names have been linked to the job. However, Crooks believes that Lopetegui could be the one to turn Tottenham’s fortunes around.
Julen Lopetegui joined Wolves in November 2022 and has since taken them from the bottom of the league to safety with a ten-point gap from relegation. Prior to that, he had managed Real Madrid, Sevilla, and Porto, as well as the Spain national team.
His biggest achievement came as a manager of Sevilla, where he guided them to winning the Europa League as well as consecutive top-four finishes. However, a poor start to the season in Spain cost him his job.
Crooks spoke highly of Lopetegui’s achievements, describing him as a first-class manager who prefers an attacking 4-3-3 formation with a fast-paced style of football involving short passing and combo play.
In his column for BBC Sport, Crooks wrote
“Julen Lopetegui has done a brilliant job since his arrival at Molineux. His players have only really let him down once and that was at Brighton. The problem for Wolves is, can they keep him? Lopetegui is a first-class manager and I can think of a number of clubs who would benefit from his services. Spurs and Chelsea are just two.”
With Daniel Levy under mounting pressure to make the right appointment, the search for Tottenham’s next manager has been ongoing for a significant period of time, leaving supporters frustrated and impatient.
Lopetegui’s appointment would be an interesting one for Tottenham. The Spanish manager has a reputation for playing attractive football and getting the best out of his players. At this point, that’s just what we need.
