Tottenham Hotspur will not appoint Julian Nagelsmann but will consider Ryan Mason

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to bring Julian Nagelsmann as the permanent coach to relieve Ryna Mason of his interim duties.

But according to Sky Sports, this will not happen. The German tactician hasn’t held any meetings with Spurs and neither are there any talks scheduled.

This will surely frustrate Tottenham fans who have been hoping for a reputed, young and dynamic coach to come in and steer Tottenham in the right direction. To add to that, Spurs will apparently consider appointing Ryan Mason on a permanent basis.

What? The 31-year-old barely has any managerial experience in the top flight. Yes he was our interim manager for April and May last year when Jose Mourinho was sacked and has managed our games since Cristian Stellini’s exit in April.

No Nagelsmann?

But that’s about it. Nagelsmann has built brilliant teams at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig that have played attractive football and overachieved in the Bundesliga.

He won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and led them to a 3-0 UEFA Champions League last-16 win against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) earlier this year. His exit from Bayern for Thomas Tuchel was a shock for many.

For us, it seemed like a golden opportunity to strike and bring him on board. But it seems Daniel Levy has something else in mind. He has appointed big names in Mourinho and Antonio Conte, but that has failed.

Appointing Mason seems like the riskiest move right now. He is doing well as an interim boss but as a permanent manager? We wonder what the likes of Harry Kane, FIFA World Cup winners Hugo Lloris and Cristian Romero, and Son Heung-min – world-class players – will think about that.

This will not be a show of ambition from the club. If it pays off, then brilliant. But given our trophy drought, a bad run of games and Levy will instantly be under pressure to sack Mason. For everyone’s sake, let’s hope we give Mason some more time before promoting him.
