Journalist Alasdair Gold reveals what Daniel Levy is seeking in two key Tottenham Hotspur appointments
Writing for Football.london, Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has revealed what Daniel Levy is looking for in his search for a sporting director and a manager.
The North London side started the season hopeful that they had turned a corner and were keen to end their long wait for a trophy. Not only has that dream prematurely come to an end but also Tottenham are akin to a rudderless ship adrift in the ocean.
Antonio Conte parted ways midway through the campaign with Fabio Paratici also following suit following FIFA upholding his ban for unlawful dealings while at Juventus. The Italian connection clearly was a flop at N-17.
Ryan Mason has once again been thrust into the spotlight with the club yet to make a decision on their new manager. Losses against Newcastle United, Liverpool, and now Aston Villa more or less rule us out of participating in European football next season- a stunning fall from grace.
To drive home the knife deeper, fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino, linked with a return to the Spurs hot seat has agreed to join arch-rivals Chelsea instead. Having him turn up on the Blues’ touchline will hurt differently.
Things could not have gotten worse but Tottenham also have distanced themselves from Julian Nagelsmann, another top contender who is available in today’s market. Levy clearly fails to inspire as the club looks set for another uncertain summer.
Gold states that Levy is looking for the right balance between the director and manager, seeking them to gel well in their roles at the club. Given that recruitment for both positions is taking place simultaneously, Levy cannot afford to get the call wrong.
With teams around such as Brighton, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa showing more ambition, Tottenham must avoid spiralling out of contention. Despite investment, the club is far from where they want to be and Levy fails to inspire confidence that he is the man to change our fortunes.

The Tottenham job has the feel of a poisoned chalice and whoever comes in next will find himself under the scanner sooner or later. One cannot help but think that Levy missed a trick by passing on Pochettino and Nagelsmann. It is time we stop giving more ammo to those who use the Spursy moniker.
