Barcelona star Clement Lenglet sets condition to join Tottenham Hotspur permanently

Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet joined Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan last summer. It has been a fruitful deal for all parties involved.

Spurs gained a quality left-footed centre-back who earned his stripes at teams like France and Barcelona. He has been largely decent apart from the occasional moment of lapses in defence.

His loan deal expires this summer and Tottenham have seemingly conveyed to Barcelona that they want to sign the player permanently. Fresh negotiations will be required for that as his current contract doesn’t include any option or obligation to buy.

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Spurs and Barcelona are yet to agree on a transfer fee for the defender. More importantly, the 27-year-old wants to wait around and see who Spurs appoint as their new manager before making his decision.

A sensible move for Spurs

It makes sense. Lenglet would certainly want to know if he will be a first-team regular at Spurs otherwise it wouldn’t make much sense for him to swap the benches in Barcelona for the benches at Tottenham.

It is being said that Julian Nagelsmann is out of the running to become Spurs’ manager (and that he was never in the picture for the job), as per Sky Sports (as covered by TTLAB). Shockingly, Spurs are said to be considering Ryan Mason for the permanent head coach role.

The 31-year-old has no real experience at the very top level and it remains to be seen what superstars such as Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Cristian Romero would think of this potential permanent appointment.

Same would apply to Lenglet. Mason is a promising coach but he will be a risky appointment and he would certainly not generate confidence among the club’s fans. Chelsea are taking the safer route by signing Mauricio Pochettino and we must do the same.
