Harry Maguire wants to dig his heels in at Manchester United amidst Tottenham interest
According to the Sun, Harry Maguire is set to dig his heels in at Manchester United despite reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur, signalling his desire to remain at Old Trafford for the upcoming season.
The Manchester United captain’s playing time was limited during the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, featuring in just 16 league matches. Nevertheless, Maguire is said to be reluctant to seek an exit from the club.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is eyeing Maguire as his first signing since taking charge. Spurs’ defensive vulnerabilities were evident last season, with the team conceding a staggering 63 goals in the league.
This statistic placed them above Everton, West Ham, and Wolves in terms of goals conceded. It is no surprise, then, that Tottenham is keen on bolstering their defensive options, and Maguire’s experience and leadership qualities make him an attractive target.
Maguire’s potential departure from Manchester United could be linked to the club’s pursuit of Napoli’s Kim Min-jae. United manager Erik ten Hag reportedly sees Maguire as surplus to requirements and is willing to use the funds generated from his sale to finance the acquisition of the South Korean centre-back.
Kim’s contract contains a release clause worth £42 million, which will become active on July 1. Newcastle United is also interested in securing Kim’s services, so Manchester United will face competition if they decide to pursue the talented defender.
While Tottenham’s interest in Maguire has gained attention, there have been rumours of Manchester United’s own ambitions. The Red Devils are eager to secure the signing of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount but are reluctant to meet the Blues’ lofty £70 million valuation.
Manchester United could potentially explore using Maguire as a part of a player-plus-cash deal to facilitate Mount’s transfer. Mauricio Pochettino, now in charge at Chelsea, had previously shown interest in Maguire during his time as Tottenham’s manager.
