Tottenham have submitted an opening £40m bid for James Maddison
According to the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur have submitted an opening £40m bid for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.
This move comes as no surprise, considering the recent claims that identified Maddison as Ange Postecoglou’s top priority target for the upcoming season. Regardless, Tottenham have been linked to him for quite some time now.
Only days after being appointed as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, Postecoglou wasted no time in expressing his desire to bring Maddison to North London. With the Australian’s approval, the Spurs hierarchy quickly swung into action, preparing to make an official approach for the English international.
Leicester, however, are not willing to part ways with Maddison without a significant fee. Despite having just one year left on his contract, the Foxes are reportedly demanding over £50m for the services of their prized midfielder.
It was even suggested that Newcastle United had emerged as favourites in the race for Maddison’s signature, with Sky Sports reporting their lead in negotiations on Sunday. This perfectly plays into the Foxes’ hands.
Although Leicester are expected to reject this offer, it must be acknowledged that £40m is a commendable starting point for Tottenham. Given Maddison’s contract situation, it demonstrates their intent and determination to secure his services for the upcoming campaign.
Leicester, on the other hand, will hope that other suitors, including Newcastle, enter the bidding war soon. Their hope is that increased competition will drive Maddison’s price closer to their desired figure of £50m.
If the Lilywhites are successful in their pursuit of Maddison, it would undoubtedly be a significant coup for the club. The 26-year-old midfielder has proven himself to be a dynamic and creative force in the Premier League, possessing exceptional vision, technical ability, and an eye for goal.
