Monchi’s arrival sees Aston Villa linked with Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso

Aston Villa have notably appointed Monchi as their sporting director after securing his services from Sevilla, which has now seen them get linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Giovani Lo Celso.

The Argentina international’s future in N17 is unclear. He has struggled since his big move from Real Betis in August 2019 and hasn’t really contributed as many goals and assists as we would have wanted him to.

The €48million man was allowed to join Villarreal on loan last summer. Before that, he spent a further six months with the Yellow Submarine.

The 27-year-old continues to be highly rated at Argentina, where he was bound to get selected for the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad if it wasn’t for an injury. But at Spurs, the story has been different.

Lo Celso to Aston Villa?

If Mauricio Pochettino were to arrive here, perhaps he could have rekindled his compatriot’s career. Ange Postecoglou’s stance on Lo Celso is unclear.

According to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, Monchi appreciates Lo Celso’s football and Aston Villa have been touted as an escape route for the former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) midfielder.

Notably, Aston Villa are managed by Unai Emery, who was Lo Celso’s manager at Villarreal. Perhaps this could be the move which rekindles his career in England. He is currently a Spurs player.

So we have to ensure that we try to recoup as much as we can for him. Villa will, after all, be getting a seasoned Argentine international who is in his prime physical years and whose contract at Tottenham doesn’t expire before June 2025 (Transfermarkt).
