Manchester City open to offers for Tottenham Hotspur target Aymeric Laporte

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte.

The Spanish centre-back arrived at the Etihad in the summer of 2018 from Athletic Bilbao. For the first couple of seasons, he set the league alight with his immaculate reading of the game, passing abilities, and the ability to play the ball out of the back.

But he has recently completely fallen down in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order, with John Stones, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake offering him competition. City are, in fact, open to selling him.

According to the Mirror, they are open to listening to offers for the former Athletic star, who they value at a mammoth £60million. That isn’t a cheap price tag for a player not in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI or even the second-string team.

What next for Laporte and Spurs?

Laporte played 993 minutes of Premier League football last season and has two years on his contract at the Etihad (Transfermarkt). They apparently want the funds to sign world-class RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol.

Those who have followed Laporte’s career know his talent. He is a very good modern centre-back and can play as a left-back with distinction.

Spurs can use a world-class left-footed centre-back like him to partner Cristian Romero in defence. He can also fill in as a defensive left-back if and when the need arises.

Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon, otherwise, are too attacking. But Spurs have to be smart here and bring down City’s valuation of Laporte by a healthy margin.

There shouldn’t be a shortage of suitors for him if and when he is put up for sale. That, and his ability, make him worth a huge price tag… but surely not £60million.
