Manchester City eye Josko Gavrdiol amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest in Aymeric Laporte

Premier League rivals Manchester City have set their sights on signing Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig amidst the interest from Tottenham Hotspur in Aymeric Laporte.

As a result, the North London side have seen their hopes of acquiring the services of the Spain international increase, with the Sky Blues looking to bolster their squad with one of Croatia’s biggest talents.

The former Athletico Bilbao defender has been linked with a move to the Lilywhites. Arsenal also have the 29-year-old on their radar as things stand.

Now as per The Times (h/t football.london), the Cityzens are close to agreeing an £86 million deal with the Bundesliga outfit to get a hold of Gvardiol’s signature in the ongoing transfer window.

The 21-year-old’s possible arrival would add another number to Pep Guardiola’s defensive ranks. At the moment, the Manchester-based club already have an abundance of talent at the back, with Ruben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji.

In the 2022/23 campaign, Laporte found it hard to get into City’s starting lineup as a result of the competition. Now, the Spaniard will seemingly go further down the pecking order if the Croatia international completes the switch to the Sky Blues.

On the other hand, at Tottenham, we evidently need to bolster our backline. Cristian Romero has been our only decent centre-back for some time now.

The likes of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies left a lot to be desired last season. Clement Lenglet, who had signed on loan from Barcelona, was also underwhelming.

Hopefully, Gvardiol moving to Manchester will open the door for Laporte to leave. It remains to be seen whether Spurs will pursue the 29-year-old’s signature this summer.
