Ange Postecoglou believes Tottenham Hotspur was the “preferred destination” of James Maddison
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou believes the North London side were the preferred destination of former Leicester City star James Maddison.
Spurs completed the playmaker’s signing from the Foxes in the ongoing transfer window for around £40 million. Apart from the England international, the Lilywhites have also added Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli to the squad this summer.
Speaking to the club’s official website (h/t Evening Standard), the Australian manager is convinced that both Maddison and the Italian shot-stopper wanted to move to Tottenham.
“They are both really excited about coming to our football club, which is also very important. For footballers these days, all these decisions are really important.
“For me, part of the driver is if I can see in them that this is their preferred destination for the right reasons, that’s enormous. I could sense with both of those guys that was the case.”
The former Leicester star has been impressive over the years in the Premier League. As a result, apart from the North London side, Newcastle United also had the midfielder on their radar.
However, in the end, the 26-year-old decided to join the Lilywhites. Spurs might not be playing in any European competition next season, unlike the Tyneside outfit, but we still have a lot of pull.
In the 2022/23 campaign, the King Power Stadium side were relegated. Despite the Foxes being poor, Maddison was impressive. The English national scored 10 goals and provided nine assists in 30 Premier League appearances.
At Tottenham, Postecoglou’s arrival starts a new chapter. Antonio Conte was unable to bring success to the North London side. Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason also failed to stabilise the ship last season.
We evidently need to overhaul our squad this summer. To that end, Spurs have already made a couple of decent additions to the team. Hopefully, more will follow as the transfer window goes on.

Maddison has established himself as a quality midfielder in the English top flight. The English national will seemingly add much-needed creativity to the Lilywhites’ engine room. Hopefully, we will be able to build an environment at the N17 for the 26-year-old to thrive.
