Gus Poyet wants to see Tottenham Hotspur be solid in defence solid next season

Tottenham Hotspur have been urged by former player and assistant manager Gus Poyet to be solid in defence compared to last season.

In the 2022/23 campaign, Antonio Conte played a back-three at the North London side. Yet, we looked shaky and conceded 63 goals in the Premier League, keeping only 10 clean sheets.

Speaking to 888sport (h/t football.london), Poyet, who played for Tottenham as a midfielder between 2001 and 2004, hopes to see a solid backline at the North London side under Ange Postecoglou.

“When you know your back four for certain that is when you are at your best because you’re solid. The rest of the team are the ones taking the headlines, but the base of the team is the goalkeeper and the back four, and I want to see Tottenham be solid there.”

Over the last few years, Spurs have not pulled many trees defensively. While we have had more defensive-minded managers in the dugout, all of them have failed to make us a resolute outfit.

Jose Mourinho is renowned for parking the bus at whichever team he manages. The Portuguese did the same at the North London side. But he was unable to find success.

Conte is also a proven winner. Unfortunately, the Italian was unable to get the best out of the players at his disposal. We struggled to hold onto leads in the previous campaign.

Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies have played a lot as our centre-backs since the 2021/22 season. Unfortunately, apart from the Argentine, none of our defenders have been consistent enough.

Last season, we had Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona. But even the French national was underwhelming for the most part. Davinson Sanchez has left a lot to be desired at the club for some time now.

Hopefully, Postecoglou will be given a few quality additions in defence in the ongoing transfer window. We evidently cannot rely on Dier and Davies being our first choice next season. Having a solid structure at the back is essential to succeed.
