Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur deal for Clement Lenglet ‘not progressing’
Talks between Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona are ‘not progressing’ for the signing of Clement Lenglet in the ongoing transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The Blaugrana do not count on the France international for the upcoming campaign. To that end, they have been in discussions with the North London side to make a move for the defender permanent.
Spurs are interested in signing the 28-year-old this summer after his loan spell at N17 last season. However, so far, the Lilywhites have been unable to agree terms with the Camp Nou side.
As a result, Lenglet is expected to join Barcelona’s pre-season training. However, the centre-back is calm about the situation. The French national has not ruled out staying at the Catalan outfit if a decent offer does not arrive.
The defender signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2018 from Sevilla. Initially, he was a key player at the Blaugrana. However, since the arrival of Xavi in the Camp Nou side’s dugout, the 28-year-old has lost his influence in the team.
Tottenham got Lenglet on a temporary move last summer. The French national played an important role in the North London side’s backline. However, he put in mixed displays at the club.
Overall, Spurs’ defence was abysmal in the 2022/23 terms and the 28-year-old was a big part of the defence. The supporting cast of Eric Dier, Ben Davies, and Davinson Sanchez did not pull up any trees, either.
Cristian Romero has been our only consistent centre-back for some time now. Unfortunately, even the World Cup-winning Argentine was not at his best in the previous campaign.

Lenglet did not do enough to convince of a starting spot in Tottenham’s starting lineup. However, it would evidently not hurt us to add more depth in the backline. The French national showcased his abilities last season to be a good backup option for us.
