Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham’s James Maddison can be a ‘leader’ this season
Ange Postecoglou has claimed that James Maddison could be a leader at Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming season.
The newly-appointed Spurs coach was speaking at a press conference when he talked about the English playmaker. He told Standard Sport:
“[I’m] really excited to get him as part of the group. Any manager will tell you that part of the key to being a dominant team is having multiple attacking threats and having a midfielder who can score and create goals. They’re not easy to come by. He’s proven himself as somebody who can do that.”
Maddison was signed this summer for a fee of £40million from Leicester City. The 26-year-old playmaker has, for long, been seen as an up-and-coming young talent.
A leader at Spurs
But he has now reached an age where fans will expect him to be one of the team’s seasoned season players. He can become a leader at Spurs as well, considering we have players like Djed Spence, Oliver Skipp and Joe Rodon that can draw from the experiences of those senior to them.
We have also undoubtedly sidelined Hugo Lloris from first-team action after Guglielmo Vicario’s move to Spurs. And ever since we lost Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in quick succession, our team has lacked leaders in the backline too.
Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Maddison could form a very important English trio of leaders in the squad that makes up the team’s spine. That is, if we manage to keep Kane at the club next summer.
Maddison in particular will have added expectations in case the English striker leaves. Even if he doesn’t, fans will be excited to see what he has to offer and will pin hopes on him to add goals from midfield.
