Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone identifies Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as ‘favourite’
Diego Simeone has identified Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as the ‘favourite’ to bolster the engine room of Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish outlet AS.
The Argentine manager is looking to add reinforcements to the middle of the park at the La Liga outfit in the ongoing transfer window. To that end, Los Rojiblancos have their eyes on the Denmark international.
As things stand, the midfielder is tied down to the North London side until 2025. While Simeone is an admirer of the 27-year-old, he is valued at €45 million, which is a complication for the Metropolitano Stadium side.
Atletico have lost Geoffrey Kondogbia to Olympique Marseille this summer. As a result, adding a pivot to their ranks in the coming weeks is a priority for the Spanish giants.
Tottenham signed Hojbjerg in the summer of 2020 from Southampton. Subsequently, he became a key player for the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte at the North London side.
In the previous campaign, the Danish national was one of the few standout stars at Spurs. Overall, the Lilywhites were poor and ended up finishing eighth in the Premier League, missing out on European football.
At the moment, Tottenham have Yves Bissouma in their ranks who can play in the number six position. However, the former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder did not live up to expectations last season.
Other players in the engine room include Oliver Skipp, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur. But the Uruguayan is on the sidelines for now and it remains to be seen when he will return. While we have signed James Maddison, he is more of a number 10.

Therefore, it would evidently be wise to keep a hold of Hojbjerg. Although the Danish national wants to play Champions League football next season, will Atletico be able to come up with the funds to sign him? Only time will tell.
