Barcelona star Clement Lenglet’s move to Tottenham Hotspur a ‘matter of time’
Tottenham Hotspur seem close to signing Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet on a permanent basis this summer.
The French defender was signed on a season-long loan last summer as we looked to bolster our defence under Antonio Conte. He had a decent first season in England and featured 35 times across competitions.
It seems Tottenham liked what they saw. They have apparently offered €5million to Barcelona to sign him permanently this summer. This is according to Spanish outlet SPORT‘s journalist Ivan Saint Anthony.
He goes on to write that it is only ‘logical’ for Barca to accept that offer as they look to wipe Lenglet’s €9million net annual wages off their books ahead of the new season. He says the transfer is a ‘matter of time’.
No-brainer for Spurs
For that amount, it is a steal. Make no mistake about that. Lenglet has played for Sevilla, France and Barcelona. He has proven his mettle in England.
To add to that, he is 28 years old and at an age where he has a lot left in his tanker. The Frenchman is a superb option to have in the squad for depth purposes.
Lenglet is contracted at Spotify Camp Nou until the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt). So multiply his annual wages by three, and Barca are in for a hefty spend on a defender they don’t really need.
Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo and Inigo Martinez are their obvious first-team options for next season. It doesn’t mean Lenglet will be an automatic starter here.

Hopefully, we have a world-class centre-back lined up before the end of the summer transfer window. But Lenglet is a brilliant player to have as the third-choice centre-back behind Cristian Romero and, hopefully, a new arrival who automatically slots into our XI.
