Ashley Phillips to join Tottenham Hotspur pre-season squad after completing £3 million switch

Tottenham Hotspur will include Ashley Phillips in their pre-season squad after concluding a £3 million deal with Blackburn Rovers, according to the Daily Mail.

The 18-year-old completed his medical with the North London side on Wednesday (19 July) and is set to join up with the rest of the squad for the ongoing tour of Australia and South East Asia.

Last season, the centre-back enjoyed a breakout campaign in the Championship. However, the Rovers are in financial turmoil at the moment and have been forced to cash in on their youngster.

Tottenham have already played a friendly against West Ham United on 18 July in Australia. The North London side were on the losing end of a 3-2 scoreline that arguably retreated our need for reinforcements at the back.

Ange Postecoglou is hoping for Spurs to bolster the defence in the coming weeks. Ideally, the 57-year-old would like to have new defenders at his disposal before the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Who is Ashley Phillips?

Born in 2005, Phillips is one of the emerging talents of English football. The 18-year-old made his way through the youth ranks at Blackburn.

Subsequently, the youngster made his competitive debut for the Rovers in August 2022, starting in their 4-0 victory over Hartlepool in the Carabao Cup first round.

Over the course of the previous campaign, the English national was sporadically used by manager Jon Dahl Tomasson. He ended up making 14 appearances in all competitions for the Lancashire-based club.
