Tottenham Hotspur eye Pedro of Flamengo as Harry Kane saga goes on

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for 26-year-old Flamengo striker Pedro as Harry Kane’s future at the club hangs in the balance.

According to the Independent, Kane’s future at Spurs is 50-50, with Bayern Munich confident of securing a summer transfer. He is in the final year of his contract at the club.

If he isn’t sold this summer, we could lose him for nothing next year — a fact chairman Daniel Levy will be well aware of. Amidst this, a surprise name has popped up on the club’s radar; one whose contract expires only in December 2027 (Transfermarkt).

It is that of Flamengo’s Pedro. It isn’t very common for teams to sign players from South America in their mid-20s… especially when it comes to big European clubs.

Pedro to Spurs?

The Vinicius Juniors, Neymars and Casemiros of Brazilian football are signed as teenagers or in their early 20s. But that doesn’t mean Brazil doesn’t have its fair share of gems in a different age category.

Fiorentina curiously took a chance at Pedro in 2019. By January 2021 — just four Serie A appearances later — he was back in Brazil.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t a good striker for a top European team. His scoring record at the Brazilian club is pretty good, with 52 goals and 12 assists in 141 games across competitions.

The report says Pedro is among a number of strikers Spurs could consider to act as Kane’s replacement if he leaves. They say Tottenham realise that a like-for-like replacement for the 29-year-old will be next to impossible.

So they will try to fill that potential void by signing players who fit Ange Postecoglou’s fluid style of play. Fans would surely wonder if Spurs are taking an easy way out with Pedro if Kane leaves. There must be more accomplished options out there that offer a better chance of success on paper.
