Guglielmo Vicario feels Tottenham Hotspur have “big potential” going into next season
Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario feels the North London side have “big potential” as they prepare for the 2023/24 term.
Spurs signed the Italian national in the ongoing transfer window from Empoli. The 26-year-old is expected to take over from veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and become the new number one at the club.
Speaking to the media via football.london, Vicario believes Tottenham have what it takes to compete. The shot-stopper has urged for the manager’s instructions to be followed in that regard.
“The club has big, big potential. We have all the facilities to make the footballers, the professionals, 100 per cent. We have to trust what the club and what the manager says to us, but I think we are a great group of guys, a great group of lads, so we can work together and we can reach the top.”
The Italian has big shoes to fill at the North London side. Spurs relied on Lloris for over a decade in between the sticks. The French national has established himself as a leader and one of our best players.
However, the 36-year-old is arguably in the final stretch of his career. The veteran goalkeeper has not been at his best for the Lilywhites for some time now and left a lot to be desired on some occasions last season as well.
Therefore, Tottenham evidently need a successor for Lloris and have gotten Vicario. The shot-stopper spent two fruitful years at Empoli, pulling off some impressive saves.
Now, the 26-year-old is at one of the biggest clubs in England. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to handle the pressure and cement a place as the number one with all eyes on him.
Vicario was in goal for Tottenham in their first pre-season match against West Ham United in Perth on 18 July. Unfortunately, the Italian was at the receiving end of two goals as the Hammers went into the break with a two-goal lead. Subsequently, Brandon Austin replaced him at half-time with the final score 3-2.
