Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou opted against signing Wolves defender Max Kilman
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou passed up on the opportunity to sign Max Kilman from Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) this summer.
Spurs have had their eyes on the 26-year-old in the ongoing transfer window. The North London side’s recruitment team were keen on acquiring the services of the English national.
However, speaking on The View From The Lane on Amazon Music, The Athletic’s Tim Spiers revealed that Postecoglou had doubts regarding Kilman’s pace. The centre-back would have been open to a move but the gaffer was not interested.
“He also has family in London, I think he would have been open to the move, but the issue with Kilman is he’s not quick, that’s what he lacks.
“And I do feel like speed is the key to what Postecoglou wants. From what I’m told the recruitment team were really hot on Kilman but Postecoglou was not and I would imagine it’s for that reason.”
Wolves signed Kilman in the summer of 2018 from National League side Maidenhead United. Subsequently, he mostly played for the Molineux Stadium side’s reserve team before making his way into the senior squad in the 2020/21 term.
Since then, the English national has done admirably and has become an important player for the West Midlands-based club. In the previous campaign, the centre-back made 41 appearances in all competitions for them.
Kilman’s journey in football is inspiring, coming into the Premier League from the fifth tier of English football. However, it looks like Postecoglou did not care much for the defender’s experience in English football.
Instead, we are close to signing Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg. The 22-year-old is an unknown quantity when it comes to the PL. Therefore, it remains to be seen how the Holland national will go about his business next season.
Tottenham evidently need to add reinforcement to their backline this summer, considering the state of our backline over the last few seasons. Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies have all been inconsistent in the central defensive position.
