James Maddison saw himself as a Tottenham Hotspur player before signing for the club this summer
James Maddison has stated his reasons for joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer after leaving Leicester City.
The England international was a subject of interest for Newcastle United earlier in the window as well. But, eventually, he signed for Spurs and has made a good start to life here so far.
It is a bit of a weird question to ask one of the top players in the country as to why he is joining Tottenham. Granted there are clubs bigger in stature than Spurs in the league, but if the question was made while neglecting the enormity of this club, then it is blind sidedness.
Anyway, when the 26-year-old was asked by Laura Woods on TNT Sport, here’s what he responded with (quoted by Hotspur Related twitter):
“People have asked ‘why Spurs?’ and whatnot. You come to points in your life, not just in your work, you have to make a decision. I could see myself as a Tottenham Hotspur player. I am really happy. It is a brilliant club and it is a big club. You feel that when you arrive and I have been made to feel very welcome.”
The Englishman played well in the first two games of the season, assisting both the goals against Brentford and running the show in attacking midfield vs Manchester United.
He is an injury doubt for the Bournemouth game after having missed training earlier in the day. He left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on crutches on Sunday.
After the departure of Harry Kane, Spurs needed a player like Maddison to come in and form a good partnership with the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Heung-min Son.
Now, while the 26-year-old is a player different in profile to Kane, he can have an impact in the team doing well by creating chances and scoring important goals.

The Maddison signing has the makings of becoming a success story for Tottenham. Let’s hope he is back fit soon and continues the good work here. A front-foot manager like Ange Postecoglou can get a lot more out of him in the coming months and years.
