Tottenham Hotspur opted for Micky van de Ven over Aymeric Laporte
Tottenham Hotspur snubbed the chance to sign Aymeric Laporte from Manchester City this summer for Micky van de Ven, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required).
The Spain international has left the Sky Blues in the ongoing transfer window and has made his way to Al-Nassr. A number of top players have made their way to the Middle Eastern country this summer.
Spurs are a team that could arguably do with reinforcements in the backline. However, the North London side felt Van de Ven was the better option to bolster the defence because he is faster and younger than the former Athletic Bilbao star.
Laporte could also have made his way to Tottenham earlier. In the summer of 2021, when City were trying to sign Harry Kane from us, the 29-year-old was offered as a part of a potential deal. However, the centre-back was not keen on the move back then.
In January 2018, the Sky Blues acquired the services of the Spaniard. Subsequently, he became a key player for the Cityzens. But in recent seasons, the defender has gone down in the pecking order under Pep Guardiola.
While Laporte is a much more experienced and successful defender, he has been injury-prone over the years. On the other hand, Van de Ven started in all but one Bundesliga game for Wolfsburg in the previous campaign.
In City’s treble-winning season, the Spaniard struggled for regular game time. The centre-back made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Sky Blues, starting in just 11 league matches.
Tottenham already have Cristian Romero in their ranks, whose constant fitness issues are concerning. Therefore, the North London side have arguably made the right choice by buying the Holland national.
