Tottenham could face fierce competition from Brentford to sign Brennan Johnson
As per John Percy for The Telegraph (subscription required), Brentford are making a late push to rival Tottenham Hotspur for signing Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson.
The Bees, who were interested in the Welsh international earlier in the window as well, are lodging their third bid for him worth around £40m.
Johnson is more or less confirmed to leave Forest before the end of this transfer window on Friday night. Spurs have been in talks with the latter to sign the former in the past few days as well.
On one hand, Brentford are preparing for life without Ivan Toney who is expected to be the subject of a bidding war among the top English clubs in January, including Tottenham. For that reason, they have targeted a move for Johnson.
On the other hand, Spurs are looking to bolster their forward line after the departure of Harry Kane. Daniel Levy is already in talks with the Forest hierarchy to conclude this deal.
Now, while the 22-year-old may not be a direct replacement for Kane in the squad, he can offer a lot more attacking threat.
The Welshman can play as a number 10 or on the wing. There might be a case for Ange Postecoglou to play him on the left wing and free up Heung-min Son to play up front and focus on scoring goals rather than doing all the running out wide.
So, this is a signing that makes a lot of sense for Tottenham. The club have done good business in this transfer window so far. A polished end to it would make the squad ready to challenge for finishing in the top four.
