Jamie Carragher reveals the reason behind the top four Premier League clubs deciding against pursuing Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has provided insight into the reasons why Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool opted not to pursue the signing of Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison.
The English star made a £40 million transfer to Tottenham this summer after Leicester City’s surprising relegation from the Premier League.
Despite numerous speculations linking him to various clubs, he ultimately joined the Lilywhites.
Now, with the 26-year-old enjoying a promising start under Ange Postecoglou, tallying two goals and four assists in his initial six Premier League appearances for Spurs, there’s curiosity about why other top English clubs didn’t pursue Maddison.
Carragher has provided his own explanation on this matter. While speaking to The Telegraph [subscription required] (h/t the Mirror), he said:
“Maddison excels most as an out-and-out No. 10. My suspicion is that Guardiola, Klopp, Mikel Arteta, and Mauricio Pochettino took a look at Maddison and were swayed more by what he does not do more than his qualities.”
“Maddison is not the quickest. He shines knitting midfield and attack, deceptively quick in possession and technically superb at quickly seeing and delivering a defence-splitting pass.”
The English star is an exceptional football talent who has truly shone for Tottenham this season.
His remarkable performances have attracted a lot of praise, with Carragher also being among those impressed by his displays. The player may not suit other club’s style of play but he is working wonders under Postecoglou.
Meanwhile, his former suitor Liverpool and his parent club Tottenham are set to lock horns for the first time this season. The Reds seem to be returning to top form following a lacklustre previous campaign, making them a strong opponent for Spurs in their upcoming match.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham’s number 10 can contribute to a victory for his team against their fierce rivals in their upcoming match.
