Brad Friedel reveals the transfers Tottenham Hotspur must make to challenge for the Premier League title
Tottenham Hotspur cult hero Brad Friedel has opened up on the club’s quick start under Ange Postecoglou but believes they could still do with a couple of transfers in the coming windows.
Spurs are yet unbeaten in the league this season and look primed to make a surprise challenge for the Premier League title. However, we have had some close shaves in certain games and do have some glaring weaknesses in the current roster.
Postecoglou has instilled belief in both the players and fans this season. The onus is now on all the stakeholders to ensure we can retain the momentum and go on to end the season well. With the January transfer window fast approaching, Daniel Levy and Co will do well to hand Postecoglou further tools to get the job done.
Friedel believes there are two key additions that could transform Tottenham’s fortunes. Speaking to Betway via 90min (h/t Football.london), he added that a reliable goal scorer can help take the heat off Richarlison and Son Heung-min when the games come thick and fast.
“When you get to the Christmas period and the FA Cup starts, and you have a lot of tricky games with regards to recovery, sometimes you won’t be at your very best and you just need a goalscorer.”
Losing Harry Kane was a huge blow for Tottenham and we are yet to bring in an able replacement for the English skipper. The summer transfer window gives us an opportunity to strengthen the side ahead of the second half of the campaign. Goals win matches and having strength in the position will help us when it comes to tight games.
The same can be said of our options at the back. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have added energy and dynamism to the rear-guard. However, the quality peters off below them in the centre-back pecking order.
“Van de Ven and Romero are performing really well, but if an injury happens, you’re going to need someone who is almost as good.”
Friedel believes a quality third choice centre-back will not just aid rotation but give Postecoglou options to manage his players better. Strength in depth is the mantra and Tottenham could do with it being addressed this coming January transfer window.
