Gary Neville puts Liverpool ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the Premier League title
Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have been rivals in the last decade as they try to fulfil their potential and get out of the moniker of being sleeping giants. While the Reds have gone on to achieve much under Jurgen Klopp, Spurs have had to play the role of the forever bridesmaid.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were optimistic of being the first North London club to secure the UEFA Champions League title but were foiled in the final in Madrid by none other than Liverpool. As much as we like to bicker about the penalty against Moussa Sissoko, it is difficult to claim that Klopp’s men did not deserve the title that season.
Since then both clubs have enjoyed differing fortunes but now find themselves in a similar boat, trying to break into the top four and also throw in a title challenge to boot. Tottenham appear to have the upper hand going into the October international break but history will show that we will be wise not to write the Merseysiders off.
Gary Neville is no Liverpool fan but the Manchester United favourite believes the Reds have a shot at winning their 20th league title. While he believes Klopp’s men have a shot, certain deficiencies in the midfield and the defence could cost them dear.
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast via Youtube (h/t Football.london), the Manchester United legend believes Liverpool have a better shot of winning the Premier League this season than Tottenham.
While the Reds lack the defensive nous of old they yet retain a potent attack with a truly world-class goalkeeper between the sticks. While we would love to prove Neville wrong, one can see why he backs Liverpool given their pedigree of upsetting the applecart in their favour.
Both Liverpool and Tottenham were involved in a controversial game earlier this month with the North Londoners prevailing 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time own goal from Joel Matip. While we admit certain decisions went against the Reds on the night, we will gladly take the three points.
For now, Ange Postecoglou’s side are top of the Premier League standings while Liverpool are three points behind in the fourth spot. Surely, we will not let our good start -fall off in the coming months.

While Liverpool are a threat, it is Arsenal and Manchester City we need to be wary of. Jurgen Klopp’s roster does have a few shortcomings, potentially preventing them from realising their full potential just yet. Our time is now and it is up to the players to make the most of it.
