Pundit says ‘Daniel Levy got lucky’ with Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur

Daniel Levy is known to take time when looking for a new permanent Tottenham Hotspur manager. It happened when Jose Mourinho left abruptly.

And Spurs got flashbacks of that time when Antonio Conte left midway through the 2022-23 season. After careful consideration, Ange Postecoglou, the former Celtic manager, was appointed.

But according to the Express, the Australian-Greek manager wasn’t Spurs’ first choice candidate. Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and former Bayern Munich manager Julian Naglesmann, who is currently managing Germany, were considered.

However, nothing materialised. And Spurs fans would probably be thankful that it didn’t. Postecoglou has been amazing, injecting team spirit into the squad, especially at a time when the club’s record goal-scorer, Harry Kane, left for Bayern.

Is he right?

Minto, however, believes Levy was lucky with the appointment. He told TalkSPORT:

“What I would say is, Daniel Levy got lucky in my opinion. Because Ange Postecoglou was about fifth or sixth choice.

“There were lots of people who they were linked to, spoke to – Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Slot. Many others. But I just think Postecoglou, whether he stumbled upon it or not, is a perfect fit for Spurs.”

To be fair to Levy, it wasn’t a bad approach to go after the more popular names in the market. Postecoglou was known by football fans when he was at Celtic, but he wasn’t a superstar name in the sport outside Scotland.

Luck has to play a part in most good things in football, as is true for any other walk of life. It still had to take a smart man to shortlist Postecoglou and bring him to Spurs, handing him the keys to a project that seemed in shambles after Conte’s exit.

At a time when Kane’s links to Bayern were strong and the team was down after a poor finish to the season, Postecoglou came in and made Spurs believe. We are top of the table after eight games and many will say we will slip up as the season goes on.

But with Ange at the helm and our best players fit, it will take a lot to stop this Tottenham team from challenging for the title. Lucky or not, Levy hit a home run with this appointment and fans can only be thankful to him for that.
