Dejan Kulusevski highlights positives of Tottenham Hotspur not playing in Europe
Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are the only traditional big six clubs not in Europe this season. Arsenal, Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Manchester City are playing in the UEFA Champions League week.
West Ham United and Liverpool have UEFA Europa League duties on Thursday, while Aston Villa are England’s sole representative in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Spurs, meanwhile, can kick back, relax, and think about how they can win their next Premier League game.
Of course, in an ideal world, Spurs fans would want the club to have a squad depth capable of competing in England and Europe simultaneously. That is something that some of the biggest clubs in the world can’t achieve on a consistent basis.
So, it isn’t the most problematic situation being on top of the Premier League table without any long mid-week trips to different corners of Europe. Dejan Kulusevski, for one, is seeing the positives in Tottenham missing out on Europe this season.
Kulusevski makes a good point
The Swedish winger believes the difference is being felt by Tottenham players now that they don’t have mid-week commitments in UEFA competitions. He said, via the Standard:
“It does for sure. You can feel the difference and hopefully, you will see it even more at the end of the season. It helps a lot, honestly. Physically, I remember last season was very hard playing three games a week.
“You feel very tired in the warm-ups! Also, mentally, not having to travel to Spain or Italy to play games helps. You are at home, with your family, you have a good rest mentally, also.”
Of course, this shouldn’t be our aim. The aim has to be to be in the UEFA Champions League every single season. Fans will completely forgive missing out on it during this campaign if we go on to win the league.

There is no point in talking about the benefits of missing out on Europe if we don’t use that to our benefit. The Premier League title, of course, should be the aim, with the team two points clear at the top after nine matches. But if that doesn’t happen, then an FA Cup and/or EFL Cup title along with a top-four finish would do as well as long as our trophy duck ends this season.
