Volendam youth coach highlights impressive traits Tottenham star Micky van de Ven possesses
Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a number of names for the centre-back position throughout the summer but eventually settled for a lesser-known name – Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.
The signing now looks visionary though considering how well the Dutchman has adapted to life in the Premier League. Always blessed with incredible pace, it looks like Van de Ven’s game is more than just that.
Centre-backs don’t usually have the reputation of being rapid. There are a few of them who are fast but not many can match Micky van de Ven when it comes to pace. When teams like to play a high line like Tottenham do, he is a dream to have.
Volendam youth coach Ruben Jongkind who had seen him at that very young age also seems to remember this as a characteristic that stood out in him, saying he had never seen something like this.
Speaking about the talented young Dutchman, here is what Jongkind had to say, as quoted by iNews.co.uk
“His athletic ability and speed, I’ve never seen that for a centre-back or defender. At a young age his remarkable speed on the field and powerful shot didn’t go unnoticed”
There aren’t many quick centre-backs on the block. Ibrahima Konate, Ronald Araujo, Kristoffer Ajer and Van de Ven are probably some of the very few in this list and the Dutchman is quicker than all the other names mentioned.
For someone like Ange Postecoglou who loves to play with a high line and an attacking mindset and makes his teams set up camp in the opposition’s half most of the times, someone like Van de Ven is a dream to have.
Paired alongside Cristian Romero who is no slouch himself, the duo complement each other perfectly. The presence of Van de Ven has also brought the best out of the Argentinian World Cup winner.

Tottenham have an excellent starting centre-back partnership. They will hope that the duo are able to start most of the games this campaign as that could directly correlate to how much success they can see in the next nine-odd months.
