Arsenal legend praises in-form Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison for role in Fulham win

James Maddison has been the talk of the town since his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

The English playmaker has come into a Spurs squad devoid of Harry Kane and has made himself one of the main guys week in, and week out. Expectedly, he was on fire against Fulham on Monday when we won 2-0 in the Premier League.

The England international scored the team’s second goal after being found by Son Heung-min inside the box. A few minutes later, he played in a delicious cross that the South Korean superstar failed to convert with his head.

Overall, Maddison arguably ran the game, putting in a tireless shift on and off the ball, looking comfortable in possession, and taking the creative onus. He now has three goals and five assists in nine league games this season.

Favorite to make Euros squad?

Praising Maddison’s display against the Cottagers earlier this week, Arsenal legend Alan Smith said on Sky Sports (h/t Football.London):

“Maddison has been outstanding this evening, Fulham haven’t been able to get near him. Surely if he keeps up this form he will easily make England’s squad for next year’s Euros.”

Making the England squad was a real problem for Maddison before his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite impressing consistently for Leicester City, the 26-year-old only made one senior appearance for the Three Lions before 2023.

England have so much quality in every position it is almost unbelievable. But no one can deny that Maddison is arguably one of the best English players on form right now — at par, or even better than Harry Kane.

Maddison seems like a player who is genuinely talented with the ball at his feet. The kind of ability that he possesses doesn’t depend on form. It stays. He can make something out of nothing. And Gareth Southgate can really use that in Germany next year.
