AS Roma could sell Bryan Cristante to Tottenham for €30m in January

A report by Italian outlet Il Romanista stated that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing AS Roma’s Bryan Cristante.

They claim that the midfielder is ‘irreplaceable’ in Jose Mourinho’s team and that the midfield is built around him. However, it is stated that Roma could consider selling him midway through the season if Spurs make an offer north of €30million in January.

Jose Mourinho apparently values the Italy international a lot. He has played in 16 games across competitions already this season, scoring two goals and providing three assists.

A little bit about Cristante. He is a 28-year-old defensive midfielder who plays at the heart of Roma’s midfield, and has been with I Giallorossi since his initial loan transfer from Atalanta in the summer of 2018.

Cristante to Spurs?

He is a good passer of the ball, has commendable ball control, and specialises in shielding his defenders. Cristante has a good work rate and is a dependable player, barely having any serious injuries since the 2019-20 season.

The 36-cap Italy international has a contract that expires in the summer of 2027 (Transfermarkt), so Roma do have a big say on the player’s future. But the price being quoted above is fair.

Cristante is experienced and is a solid addition to any team’s midfield. That being said, Ange Postecoglou should have a plan on where he intends to play the former Atalanta man, given we already have Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pape Matar Sarr in central midfield.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg seems set to leave the club in 2024 with Juventus keen on his services, so that could free up some space. But then again, we also have Giovanni Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele (out on loan at Galatasaray) on the wage bill. We must ensure that we get out a few expendable players before we add Cristante to the team.
