Gary Mabbutt draws parallels between Tottenham and Liverpool
Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt has drawn striking parallels between the current trajectory of Spurs and the transformative journey undertaken by Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. Mabbutt, a former defender for Tottenham, believes that Ange Postecoglou’s side has made key signings reminiscent of Liverpool’s impactful acquisitions of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.
Tottenham experienced their best-ever 10-game start to a Premier League season, sitting proudly at the top of the table, outpacing three-time back-to-back winners Manchester City. Despite recent setbacks with consecutive losses against Chelsea and Wolves, Mabbutt remains optimistic about the direction in which Postecoglou is steering the club.
Postecoglou’s summer signings – goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, defender Micky van de Ven, and midfielder James Maddison – have played instrumental roles in Tottenham’s promising start. While Van de Ven and Maddison face injuries that will keep them sidelined until the New Year, Mabbutt sees a parallel between Tottenham’s resurgence and Liverpool’s ascent with key signings.
Mabbutt’s comparison centres on the impact that Virgil van Dijk and Alisson had on Liverpool’s fortunes. These signings played pivotal roles in Liverpool’s success in both the Champions League and the Premier League. According to Mabbutt, Tottenham’s new triumvirate, despite recent setbacks, is already making a similar impact on the team.
Here is what he told Sky Sports via Express:
“It’s been an incredible turnaround this season. Ange coming in, the players that we’ve signed. I think we’ve signed some quality players.
“For me, if you look at Liverpool four or five years ago, they were struggling to get into the top two and challenging for the title. Then Liverpool signed a couple of players in Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, who in my opinion transformed their team.”
“Everybody around them seemed to become better players. We’ve brought in Vicario, we’ve brought in Van de Ven and Maddison.”
Can we win some trophies this year?
The optimism surrounding Tottenham’s future remains intact despite recent defeats, with Mabbutt’s insightful comparison highlighting the potential transformative influence of Postecoglou’s signings.
Our gaffer has also made it public information a couple of times in the past that he was a Liverpool fan growing up. Hopefully, Vicario, Micky and Madders can have an impact at Spurs similar to what Alisson and Virgil van Dijk did at Liverpool.
As the season unfolds, Tottenham fans can look forward to witnessing the evolution of a squad that has drawn inspiration from the successful Liverpool model, with the hope that the journey will lead to sustained success shortly.
